9 that on crime issues, members were rather illiberal, with pluralities believing that stiffer sentences should be handed out to criminals, and that life sentences should mean life. In response to both of these questions, Liberal Democrat voters are even more supportive of tough policies than the members. Seven in every ten voters believed in tougher sentencing and eight in ten believed that life sentences should be for life. 4, which compared members’ and voters’ social characteristics, we raised the question of whether the differences that existed between them might cause problems for the party.
The fact that members are more likely to be men, and also more likely to be older, wealthier, and better educated than the voters could be a problem when the party tries to recruit women, the young, and the less well off. However, this is a problem that is not unique to the Liberal Democrats; all the major parties in Britain face it. Returning to an examination of the party members, one of the key issues from the point of view of the national party organization is how much the members are attached to the party, and how much they are prepared to work for it.
