Example text

28 There’s Room for Me Here cut. Even when literacy skills and strategies are taught through direct instruction, they must always be embedded in a meaningful context. For example, flashback can be taught using Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet; prediction can be taught with Lois Duncan’s I Know What You Did Last Summer; and spelling patterns can be examined by looking closely at the words in poetry such as Shel Silverstein’s Falling Up or Ogden Nash’s Custard & Company. Of all the resources in our room, the literacy resources are the most vital in hooking students as readers.

Most of the young adult titles I had, however, were more appropriate for high school than for middle school—especially middle-level struggling readers. And I had very few picture books. However, my principal had allotted a small budget for the Literacy Project’s classroom library. In addition, as I told friends, colleagues, and older students about my classroom, I began receiving donations. I applied for and received a grant from our PTSA (parent-teacher-student association) for funds that helped me buy both new books and books on tape.

A related problem for my students was their inability to get along with some of their other teachers. Their frustration at not understanding the material or not being able to complete assignments often turned into anger toward a particular teacher: why couldn’t he or she give them the individual attention they needed to succeed? While I knew I couldn’t solve the problems inherent to large classes, whole-group instruction, and text-driven curriculum, there were things I could tell my students about that would help them in these potentially disastrous situations.
