Forms of globalization have allowed greater opportunities for travel for some and a growing awareness of different cultures. However, ideas of the exotic still abound in ways in which the South is represented.

The idea that images and descriptions of places can help to shape the ways in which people think and act is a long-established theme in Geography (for example, in the ﬁeld of Critical Geopolitics: Ó Tuathail, 1996), and over the past two decades has also been important for academics writing about the Global South. One way in which representations of the Global South can have powerful effects is through the repeated use of restricted forms of description: these can, intentionally or otherwise, ‘ﬁx’ ideas of a place in our minds, and shape the way we respond to it.
Of course, what is really being discussed is how particular groups of people in the North imagine the South, or parts of the South. Thus, it is important to recognize the heterogeneity within the North, as well as the operation of power relations within it. As Morag Bell (1994) exempliﬁes, some of the ways in which the British working class were discussed by the middle and upper classes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were similar to the language used in relation to populations in Africa.
