It is now a widely held view among classical art historians that the pervasive appeal of scenes depicting the mythical and legendary battles of the gods with the giants and of Greek heroes with Amazons and centaurs stemmed from the fact that these myths came to be understood by the Greeks as allusions, a form of indirect discourse, so to speak, to the Greeks' struggle with the Persians and to the moral nature of their ultimate victory.
