There are two distinct differences in the nature of the mold's life cycle. On the one hand, the portion of the life cycle in which the mold is haploid is considerably greater than that of the higher organisms. Indeed, shortly after fertilization, when the diploid condition is restored, meiosis ensues to give rise to haploid nuclei, which is the condition of most of the nuclei of the mold during the course of its growth.
