It. Is. Strange Bird INTRODUCTION Behind the Door WILLY HOFFMAN STRODE through Paris in June 1941 bearing special orders from Germany. His journey took him to a set of massive doors at 12 rue Chanoinesse, a noble address on the Île de la Cité in the middle of the Seine. When he opened these doors, heavily carved with rectangles and arcs in the shape of a Roman soldier’s breastplate, he found himself propelled back to an earlier time, long before Nazi flags waved over Paris. Beyond the entryway, wide and high enough to accommodate a horse-drawn wagon, lay a medieval courtyard with a carved stone well hearkening back to the city’s earliest days.

His brother Dr. Curt Otto had shepherded Tauchnitz from the dawn of the century until his death in 1929. Under his watch, Tauchnitz had solidified its reputation as a cultural link among peoples, and only his clever maneuvering had kept Tauchnitz alive in the Great War, when its volumes were treated as politically laden pawns speaking for Germany’s enemies. 8 In 1931, Hans Otto faced different challenges entirely. He had been grappling to keep Tauchnitz liquid amid the global financial calamity the American Depression had spawned abroad.

He took the stone, cracked it in two pieces and handed the smaller piece back to his mother-in-law. 15Otto had seen versions of this behavior: so long as Wegner met his goals, he expected others to deal with the consequences. Only this time Wegner was left holding the smaller piece of the stone. And Otto did not realize what kind of enemy he had created. In his career, as in school, Wegner followed only those rules he chose to. This habit had landed him in trouble at Insel, in a “row” with his aunt that had led to his leaving, and then again at Tauchnitz.
