Italian Renaissance architecture has been described as spreading not as a 'total configuration' but in fragments [34]. We might reasonably speak of 'bricolage', that is, of the incorporation of new Italian elements into traditional local structures, particularly in the first phase of reception. In France in the early sixteenth century, for example, Italian decoration had more of an appeal than Italian plans. In the case of the castle ofChambord, for instance, built for Franc;ois I, the round towers are obviously traditional and only the architectural details are distinctively new.

In music, the Netherlands was recognised 27 as pre-eminent, even by Italians; the Donatello of music, as one Italian writer put it, was Ockeghem, and its Michelangelo was Josquin des Pres [54]. Major artists and writers such as Holbein and Durer, Erasmus and Montaigne, Shakespeare and Cervantes were inspired by Italian models, but not by these alone, and in any case they did not follow their models slavishly. In other words, the traditional account of the reception of the Renaissance is misguided.

Where could one go from there? In a late phase of any artistic or literary tradition a need to react against this tradition, which seems exhausted, is likely to be felt.
