The SRP chairman Fritz Dorls had been a loyal NSDAP member since 1929. In 1951 the SRP mustered 11 percent of the Landtag (state parliament) vote in Lower Saxony. Among many of its 10,000 members were expellees and refugees from Eastern Europe. Although many joined the SRP, most supported the newly formed Bund der Heimatlosen und Entrechteten (BHE, League of Expellees and Dispossessed) as a way to publicize their irredentist demands. Eventually the CDU/CSU espoused their cause, thus reducing a BHE electoral threat.

On such occasions, its 400 members, who had belonged to numerous neo-Nazi groups, were armed and wore uniforms, comparable to Free Corps members during the early Weimar era.
