Exercise is a natural mood elevator. Without getting too technical, exercise triggers endorphins in your mind that create a "feel good" sensation in your body.

But women had access to little that would enlighten them about the correlation between good health and exercise, and Jane's videos shared little information about overall health and wellness or reality. In the 1980s, when the video craze was beginning, exercise was seen only as the ticket to having a great body. As exercise videos grew in popularity, so did our focus on weight and size. Every exercise video "hostess" had a great body and unending energy. We all wanted to possess that energy and body, so we kept buying the videos in hopes that maybe just the right one would do the trick.

Others, who weren't getting the results they wanted, simply quit. In the early 1990s, the leg warmers vanished, and Jane Fonda went from "Feel the Burn" to "Ease the Burn" through yoga. She exchanged jumping for mantras. But because of Jane's trailblazing, everyone who ever exercised in their life (or who had claimed to) became part of the exercise video scene, and sales in exercise videos skyrocketed, from the FIRM to Richard Simmons to Susan Powter. Though Jane ditched the leg warmers for leggings and lost the feel-the-burn approach, her yoga tapes still weren't educating women about balanced living.
