Уцелели forty six биографий сведённых в пары (в каждой паре, один греческий герой и один римский), и four биографии представленные по отдельности. Помимо высоких литературных достоинств «Сравнительные жизнеописания» содержат и бесценную историческую информацию. Так как Плутарх использовал большое количество материала из многих источников, которые не сохранились до нас.
