Presumably, uninvited median group members were not consciously aware of the dinner party either before or after it was held, let alone who attended it. It is suggested, however, that the membershipat-large intuited the existence of this group of eight and found a stand-in for it during the workshop proper. Since the membership had no direct knowledge of or access to the Shadow Eight, it reified the loose grouping of members (‘the Eight’) of the Local Group Society. Since the Shadow Eight was unidentifiable, so was its proxy.

32 BUILDING ON BION: BRANCHES Some comparisons between a Tavistock large group set-up and midsize or median group analysis It is possible for a clinician to turn attention to the structure of a group and to the forces operating in that structure without losing touch with his patient. 25) A relatively unstructured large group event is an important part of Tavistock and A. K. Rice conferences (Rice 1965; Turquet 1975; Main 1975). Participation in an A. K. Rice large group includes the whole of the membership (usually between 40 and 60 persons).

With Jacob missing, Simon joined the group ‘as if ’ he was a member. He cast Philip (as a second scapegoat) in the role of devil, thereby condemning and banishing him from the heavenly circle of the median group’s good graces. The membership seemed ambivalent about Simon using his power in this way and became split around the condemnation and defense of Philip (and of Simon). The group struggled to decide whether it (and especially Philip) had murdered Jacob or whether he committed (figurative or literal) suicide.
