The focus of the UNWTO TedQual Volunteers Programme, however, is situated within a knowledge management framework, with knowledge transfer and knowledgesharing employed as a means of enhancing the opportunities for developing countries and regions and benefiting stakeholders. The importance of knowledge is identified in the World Bank’s (1998) report on development practices and the role of aid in developing countries where it is claimed that knowledge is one of the most essential best practices.

The chosen project should be one that is important to the sustainable tourism development efforts of the country with 30 L. Ruhanen et al. possible areas of focus including marketing strategies, product assessment, development plans, business plan creation, development of community-based tourism plans, interpretation strategies and the development of pro-poor tourism strategies. Depending on the nature of the specific project, the fieldwork research tasks may include an internal analysis of the attractors, resources and support systems of the tourism industry in the country or specific area of the country, visits to tourism sites and/or to determine potential sites for tourism products, and interviews and workshops with relevant stakeholders including the government, industry and local community to ensure broad-based participation in the project.

Knowledge Transfer Through Volunteer Experiences As the chapters in this volume demonstrate, volunteering generates benefits not only to the individual volunteer, but also, importantly, contributes to the broader economic and social goals of society. Research on the motivations of volunteers has found that individuals primarily volunteer for altruistic and self-interest reasons (Stebbins, 1982; Clary and Snyder, 1991).
