2 General Considerations Many factors contribute to image quality. In addition to the hardware employed, these include the signal to noise ratio (SNR), contrast to noise ratio (CNR), spatial resolution, pulse sequences, and scan time. 5 T). P. 1 Introduction During the past decade MR imaging of the hip joint has gained high value. Nowadays, this method plays an important role in the evaluation of hip disorders. Scanning techniques have improved dramatically and provide MR images with excellent quality. However, an optimal MR examination obtains a maximum amount of information in a given time period. Local practices and other factors dictate certain aspects of the examination. In every clinical setting there must always be a compromise between a long examination, which may be unnecessarily thorough, and a cursory study, which leaves major questions unanswered.
CT fluoroscopy times of around 10 s should suffice for most biopsy procedures (Goldberg et al. 2000). Limiting the fluoroscopy to identification of the needle tip rather than the entire needle will also reduce operator and patient radiation dose (Silverman et al. 1999). The CT section thickness should be appropriate to the size of the lesion, otherwise partial volume averaging may include both the needle tip and the lesion in the same section, erroneously suggesting an accurate needle location.
