Neither prescribes any particular orientation for the street system. Certain authors had peculiar ideas about so orientating the streets as to admit or exclude certain winds (see Vitruvius i. 6) ; to make these work, the winds would have to cooperate by always blowing along certain fixed lines. -S. -W. The contours were the decisive factor. On level ground the choice was free. On a slope or a ridge the long main streets naturally ran with the contours as far as possible, the cross-streets took the steeper course.

Plato (Laws 778, 9) and Aristotle (Politics vii. 10. 11) in prescribing the proper form of a city confine themselves to the most general recommendations. ' The difficulty with such things is not so much in the matter of theory but in that of practice ', says Aristotle ; each architect or planner had to use his ingenuity in coping with the problems of each particular site. Careful planning was by the fourth century recognized as a good thing and an asset to a city ; the chaotic state of the streets of Athens was condemned by some writers.
