In addition, it is possible to manually refine the output of the SS-MIG by adding, removing or modifying some of the patterns found by the SS-MIG. 3 Content Based Queries The matching between the input and the scores stored into MAIS is performed in several steps, graphically illustrated in Figure 3b. The input can be either an audio file or a score fragment, played by the user on a keyboard or sung 30 Loretta Diana, Goffredo Haus, and Maurizio Longari or whistled into a microphone connected to the computer [14].

The search is guided by specialized heuristics that embody knowledge about the signal processing functions built by the system. Signal processing patterns are used in order to control the general function extraction methods. Rewriting rules are introduced to simplify overly complex expressions. In addition, a caching system further reduces the computing cost of each cycle. In this paper, we describe the overall system and compare its results against traditional approaches in musical feature extraction a` la Mpeg7.
