The bond was too strong. Let's go back to the early movies. Rainer told me that everybody in the group had jointly wanted to make the first ten movies. Later it was reported that he was the only one who wanted to make them. Of course, that hurt his feelings. What about it -were all of you behind him, or was there some dissension? Nothing like that. It was an adventure for us all. But, of course, it was he who wanted the movies. We were the pawns in his game. For us, it was exciting to be part of it, but he was the driving force.
Late in 1974, Rainer became co-director at TAT in Frankfurt. He asked me if I wanted to be part of it. I think he accepted the co-directorship partly for the sake of the group. Perhaps that is why he appointed Kurt Raab as co-director which, I believe, was a real mistake. But Kurt needed the job, since Rainer was not always able to cast him. Why would Rainer take on the directorship for your sake? I once blamed him for the entire collapse. I hadn't meant it all that seriously but it apparently hit him very hard.
