The most serious environmental impact of armed conflict is pollution. Pollution can take many forms, and it can result directly from actions by military or other armed groups, as well as indirectly from human and economic crises created by the conflict. In the recent conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa, for example, pollution has most often been a serious problem during humanitarian crises. Refugees and internally displaced people often find themselves living in conditions so overcrowded that they become a significant source of potential pollution.

Guo diseases. The latter concern threatens not just the health of human populations but also that of the indigenous wildlife (Kalpers 2001).
In addition, it has a complex sociology, including substantial populations of non-Han Chinese ethnic minorities, many of which are the dominant ethnic group within some of its border regions. As noted, in terms of government performance, the World Bank assigns China a relatively high score on its ranking of government effectiveness; however, China performs less impressively on other measures of government accountability (World Bank Institute 2009). One key factor compromising positive assessments of government accountability in China relates to the challenges China’s central government faces in governance at the local level.
