This type of operation is needed when restarting a crashed node with a fragment replica having a subfragmented hot standby. The operation may also be done when a new node is included and some subfragmented fragments are to be gathered and merged at this node. The log stream from each subfragment will be kept separate. After a following takeover, all new log records are entered into a separate log and they are given LSNs that are higher than the LSNs in all the subfragment logs. The subfragment logs will be removed as part of the checkpointing policy .
As soon as the locks are set, new transactions may be served. Thus, by shipping locks together with log records, the period where the fragment is unavailable during takeover is minimized. New transactions may be served concurrently with the redo and undo resulting from the takeover. Third, for each failed node a redo phase will be started. The task of a redo phase is to redo all pending log records from the failed node and to close the log stream. Fourth, undo recovery of "failed" transactions will be done by an undo thread.
